The Partners for Healthy Babies program started in 1993.
The program is funded by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Maternal and Child Health and WIC Programs.
Our program started because about 10 percent of all babies in Louisiana were born small and weak. These are called low birthweight babies (less than 5.5 pounds) and many of them die before their first birthday.
Our goal is to link pregnant women to the services they need to help them be healthy, and have healthy babies.
We want women to:
- Call the 1-800-251-BABY (2229) helpline for help and information
- Get early prenatal care
- Practice healthy behaviors during pregnancy
Program Activities
Multi-media Outreach
We produce and air TV and radio commercials, bus signage, billboards, posters, flyers and brochures.
Website
Our website (www.1800251baby.org) links women with important pregnancy-related information, and provides useful information for health care providers.
Public Relations
We develop and distribute press kits, press releases and newsletters.
Community Outreach
We develop partnerships with agencies, give presentations, and distribute materials, particularly throughout the New Orleans community.
Prenatal Care Fairs
We hold events that reward women for receiving early prenatal care. Participants are eligible to win free car seats and other infant merchandise. Those attending also receive information on many relevant topics. Sign-ups are through the website, helpline, and health care providers.
