Louisiana Oral Health Program

The Louisiana Oral Health Program serves to promote the importance of good oral health through education, community outreach, and addressing barriers in Louisiana that prevent our citizens from achieving optimal oral health. Oral health contributes to and is influenced by one’s overall health. Maintaining good oral health is very important. Additionally, oral health affects one’s quality of life.
School-based Dental Sealant Program
The Louisiana Seals Smiles Program targets 2nd and 6th graders. The program provides dental sealant screening and application to 2nd and 6th graders in their schools. Schools that are eligible for the program must have a student body with at least 50% qualifying for the National School Lunch Program (free or reduced lunch program).
Community Water Fluoridation Program
CWF is a public health intervention aimed towards decreasing the rates of dental decay, thereby preventing cavities and improving oral health. Community water fluoridation benefits all citizens of a population regardless of age, income level, education level, or ability to afford or access care.
Expanded Dental Services for Pregnant Women
This extension of the Medicaid program allows women to receive dental services while they are pregnant. Recipients must obtain a referral from the medical professional providing pregnancy care using the BHSF Form 9-M. Covered services include: periodontal exams, X-rays, dental cleaning, certain restorative services, certain periodontal services, and certain oral and maxillofacial surgery services.
