Sexual Violence Prevention
The Rape Education and Prevention Program grant is now housed in the state’s MCH Program.
Since 1995, federal funding for the grant has allowed Louisiana to build and support prevention and intervention services throughout the state via a network of Sexual Assault Centers
The goal of the program is to work towards ending sexual violence through education, program support and social change. Resources are provided to a coalition and 14 community-based rape crisis centers to support these efforts.
The Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault (LaFASA) is the main partner for this effort. They are a coalition of the state’s community-based rape crisis centers. The rape crisis centers are non-profit agencies (both urban and rural).
Services provided by the centers include
- 24-hour crisis hotlines
- crisis intervention
- individual and group counseling
- accompanying survivors to the hospital for the post assault examinations.
- education about sexual assault prevention in communities, including schools, civic groups, churches, fraternities and sororities, and professionals who work with sexual assault victims, such as hospital staff and law enforcement offices.
Although the Rape Education and Prevention Program supports the centers, the centers rely heavily on volunteers to assist with services.
