Nutrition
There are services available, such as WIC, to help you get enough food for you and your baby.
Eating & Nutrition
What is WIC?
WIC is a supplemental food program for Women, Infants and Children and is easy to qualify for. WIC also provides information on healthy eating and offers referrals to other health, welfare and social services.
Who qualifies for WIC?
- Pregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth of an infant)
- Breastfeeding women (up to infant’s 1st birthday)
- Nonbreastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant)
- Infants and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk
WIC and Breastfeeding
WIC encourages and supports breastfeeding and can provide breastfeeding information. Women who breastfeed receive follow-up support through peer counselors, as well as receive breast pumps and other nursing aids. Breastfeeding mothers are also eligible to participate in WIC longer than non-breastfeeding mothers. Call Partners for Healthy Babies at 1-800-251-BABY (2229) to find out where to get WIC services so you can learn more about nutrition and diet before, during and after pregnancy.
