Other Useful Information

Below are just a few additional topics that may comfort and assist you throughout your pregnancy. For additional information on any of these topics, please call 1-800-251-BABY (2229).

Common Pregnancy Pains

Women go through many changes during pregnancy, both physically and emotionally. Here is a list of common pregnancy pains that you may experience:

Backaches
Headaches
Leg Cramps
Morning Sickness & Nausea
Nosebleeds
Swollen Ankles
Fatigue

If you are experiencing any of the above problems, please talk to your doctor about how you can reduce these pains.

Kegel Exercise

Practice starting and stopping the flow of urine. This is known as a kegel exercise. To strengthen these muscles, do this throughout the day. This will help to prepare you for delivery and to recover from birth.

Exercise

It is a good idea to exercise while you are pregnant. Do not do contact sports or high impact exercise, because they can hurt you and your baby. Talk with your doctor about a good program for you, like walking a half hour each day!

Sleep

Rest as much as you can. You may be more tired now — this is normal. Try to sleep on your left side (this will help get enough blood to your baby and help your legs from swelling), put pillows between your legs, and under your belly and back. Do not sleep on your stomach or your back.

Feelings of Depression

This is normal. You're going through very big changes, and that may seem like too much. Maybe you hadn't planned on getting pregnant — or feel lonely or worried about how you will afford a baby. That is why it is vital to share your feelings with friends and family; they can help! If you feel depressed or are being abused, talk to your doctor — he/she can help too.

If you have questions or need help, please talk to your doctor or call Partners for Healthy Babies at 1-800-251-BABY (2229).
