The GIFT (Breastfeeding)
The GIFT (Guided Infant Feeding Techniques) is a certification program for hospitals in Louisiana that is based on the best practice model to increase breastfeeding initiation, duration and support. Hospital staff play a critical role in the establishment of breastfeeding, and this program helps to assure that the criteria for educating new parents and hospital staff on the techniques and importance of breastfeeding have been met.
In addition, The GIFT is a tool for hospitals to enhance their breastfeeding services and promote breastfeeding as the norm. Designation as GIFT-certified, requires a hospital to demonstrate that it has met the “Ten Steps to a Healthy Breastfed Baby.” The GIFT Program Coordinator maintains a close relationship with the hospital by assisting in meeting the criteria, conducting on-site visits and periodic data collecting specific to breastfeeding rates.
