SBIRT/Healthy Babies
SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment. It is a collaborative effort between the Office of Addictive Disorders, Office of Mental Health and the Office of Public Health, MCH – whereby substance use and mental health needs among pregnant women are addressed. SBIRT- Healthy Babies is an evidence based program that was developed by the Children’s Research Triangle lead by Dr. Ira Chasnoff.
How Does SBIRT Work?
SBIRT is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders and mental health needs.
- Screening quickly assesses substance use, as well as domestic violence and depression
- Brief intervention focuses on increasing insight and awareness regarding these issues and motivation toward behavioral change.
- Referral to treatment provides those identified as needing more extensive treatment referral to needed services and care.
