SBIRT/Healthy Babies

SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment.  It is a collaborative effort between the Office of Addictive Disorders, Office of Mental Health and the Office of Public Health, MCH – whereby substance use and mental health needs among pregnant women are addressed. SBIRT- Healthy Babies is an evidence based program that was developed by the Children’s Research Triangle lead by Dr. Ira Chasnoff.

How Does SBIRT Work?

SBIRT is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders and mental health needs.

  • Screening quickly assesses substance use, as well as domestic violence and depression
  • Brief intervention focuses on increasing insight and awareness regarding these issues and motivation toward behavioral change.
  • Referral to treatment provides those identified as needing more extensive treatment referral to needed services and care.

Each of the administrative regions of the sate have an assigned SBIRT coordinator. Consult the chart below to find coordinators by region.
